Sumter Police Department

SC Fallen Officers – January 21

Today, we remember Sumter Police Department Police Officer William Alvah Clyde and Sumter Police Department Corporal Charles Richard “Chuck” Nesbitt, Jr.

On this date in 1908, Police Officer William Clyde was shot and killed in the area of Bradford Springs while attempting to arrest a fugitive who had escaped from a chain gang two months earlier.

On this date in 2011, Corporal Chuck Nesbitt was killed in an automobile accident on Highway 521 near Rembert at approximately 3:00 pm.
