South Carolina State House Grounds, Columbia, SC

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Memorial stands as a solemn and powerful tribute to the men and women who gave their lives in the line of duty protecting the citizens of this state. Located on the grounds of the South Carolina State House, this memorial represents the deep gratitude of a state—and a brotherhood—that will never forget their sacrifice.
The Fraternal Order of Police’s Commitment
The South Carolina Fraternal Order of Police played a vital role in the creation of this lasting monument. As detailed on the on-site dedication plaque, FOP leaders not only envisioned but led the development of this project.
The effort was overseen by Jerry W. Wright, Chairman of the South Carolina Fraternal Order of Police Memorial Fund, Inc. He was supported by a dedicated Memorial Committee composed of:
- Jimmy Mixson
- Dan Isgett
- Naomi Morris
- Chuck Canterbury
- David McClure
- Bob Carr
- David Lee
- Darrell Lewis
The Memorial Chairman was Mike Loftis, with Robert P. Young serving as the designer.
Though the project was initially authorized in 1994, it did not receive funding until 2003 when the General Assembly appropriated $500,000. Thanks to the persistence and advocacy of the FOP and its partners, the memorial was installed on February 15, 2006.
Design and Symbolism
At 45 feet in diameter, this is the largest monument on the Statehouse grounds. At its center stands a pillar crowned with a bald eagle, bearing the inscription:
“Lest We Forget: Dedicated to the Men and Women Who Helped Preserve Law and Order.”
Encircling the memorial are the engraved names of South Carolina’s fallen law enforcement officers—beginning with those who made the ultimate sacrifice as far back as 1797. At the time of its dedication, 308 names were recorded. Additional names are added each year, a somber reminder of the cost of public service.
The memorial is bisected by a “thin blue line” of handcrafted glass bricks created by Columbia’s own One Eared Cow Glass. This line symbolizes the critical role of law enforcement in standing between order and chaos.
A Permanent Place of Honor
This memorial, along with the South Carolina Armed Forces Monument, was among the final additions to the State House grounds before the General Assembly declared the site “full” in 2005. Its inclusion reflects the significance our state places on public service, sacrifice, and remembrance.
Annual Ceremony of Remembrance
Each year, the South Carolina FOP holds a formal memorial service at this site to honor our fallen officers. Families, fellow officers, public officials, and community members gather in solemn unity, ensuring the legacy of our heroes is never forgotten.
This memorial is more than stone and glass—it is a living symbol of honor, remembrance, and the enduring strength of those who protect and serve.
