SC Fallen Officers – January 22

January 22, 2025

Today, we remember City of Camden, SC Police Department Patrolman Robert Latta and Turbeville Police Department Chief of Police Samuel Edward Yates.

On this date in 1919, Patrolman Latta was shot and killed while responding to a domestic disturbance in which a husband was attempting to kill his wife. Patrolman Latta was shot by the man when he arrived at the scene. The suspect was then shot and wounded by several citizens and taken into custody. The suspect died in jail from his wounds days later.

On this date in 1961, Chief of Police Yates suffered a heart attack after quelling a disturbance at a high school basketball game.
