SC Fallen Officers – March 8

Today, we remember Deputy U.S. Marshals Christopher Duffie Corbin and William Benjamin Franklin Corbin.

On this date in 1909, both Marshals were shot and killed while attempting to arrest a man for shooting and damaging a rural postal box. They located the man hiding in the loft of a barn approximately three-quarters of a mile south of Walhalla. As they attempted to remove him, the suspect’s family members opened fire on the Marshals, killing both.

SC Fallen Officers – March 5

Today, we remember United States Marshals Service Deputy U.S. Marshal John D. Kirby and Fairfield County Constable David C. Dickey.

On this date in 1896, Deputy U.S. Marshal John Kirby was shot and killed in Holly Springs while he and several other U.S. Marshals were bringing two men they had arrested to jail.

On this date in 1910, Constable Dickey succumbed to wounds sustained when he was shot while investigating a suspicious person related to a prior homicide.

Today, we remember Deputy U.S. Marshal William Anderson Looper.

On this date in 1871, Deputy US Marshal William Looper was shot and killed near Pickens, South Carolina, while attempting to seize a wagon transporting illegal whiskey.

SC Fallen Officers – February 12

Today, we honor Deputy U.S. Marshal Van Buren Hendrix, who in 1877 when was shot and killed in Greenville County while he and several deputies attempted to arrest an escaped prisoner.
