Dear Members of the South Carolina Parole Board,

I am writing to respectfully urge you to DENY PAROLE for Tommy Thompson, inmate #00072571, who was convicted of murdering Patrolman First Class Ben Strickland of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Patrolman Strickland was senselessly murdered during a traffic stop in Lexington County. While Patrolman Strickland was arresting another individual, inmate #00072571 pretended to be unconscious, then ambushed and shot Patrolman Strickland with a sawed-off shotgun. After the attack, inmate #00072571 forced entry into a nearby home, held a man hostage, and used him to escape law enforcement, remaining at large for over seven hours.

Patrolman Ben Strickland dedicated 16 years of service to the South Carolina Highway Patrol and was a proud United States Army veteran. He was highly respected in the community, active in civic organizations, and, above all, a devoted son, husband, and father to two sons.

At the time of this crime, inmate #00072571 was already on probation. His actions demonstrate a continued threat to public safety and an absolute disregard for the law. Parole is a privilege—not a right—and should not be granted in this case.

As a supporter of the Fraternal Order of Police and in the interest of public safety and justice, I respectfully ask that you DENY PAROLE for inmate #00072571. The severity of this crime warrants that he remain incarcerated for the remainder of his life sentence.
