When elected officials want to hear directly from law enforcement, they turn to the Fraternal Order of Police. That principle was on full display during our recent Board of Directors meeting in Columbia. We welcomed Congresswoman Nancy Mace for a conversation with our state leadership.

Congresswoman Mace’s visit was more than a courtesy. It was a reflection of her belief in law and order and the vital role law enforcement plays in securing the foundation of any community. As she shared with our members, “Without public safety, there can be no prosperity.” Her message was clear. Strong public safety policies must remain a top priority for South Carolina and the nation.
She expressed concern over a growing disconnect in the criminal justice system. Officers spend time building solid cases, only to see them fail in prosecution. She voiced the need for accountability in the judicial process and offered her perspective on what South Carolina’s next Governor should focus on to turn that tide.

But Congresswoman Mace did not come to speak only. She came to listen. During a thoughtful and wide-ranging Q&A, she heard directly from our members about the challenges we face. These include pension issues, unsustainable insurance premiums, recruitment and retention difficulties, and stagnant pay structures. Her willingness to engage with these concerns demonstrated respect for those on the front lines.
Moments like these remind us why the FOP exists. The South Carolina Fraternal Order of Police is not just a fraternal organization. We are the voice of law enforcement. And when political leaders want to understand the real challenges faced by officers, they come to us.
