Honoring the Fallen: Police Week 2025

May 11, 2025

Honoring the Brave: Peace Officers Memorial Day and Police Week 2025

Each May, our nation pauses to honor those who have given their lives in the line of duty. Peace Officers Memorial Day, observed annually on May 15, stands as a solemn tribute to local, state, and federal officers who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving and protecting their communities. It also marks the beginning of National Police Week, a time dedicated to remembering the fallen, supporting their families, and reaffirming our collective respect for the men and women of law enforcement.

Why May 15 Matters

This date was first designated in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy, who signed legislation establishing May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week surrounding it as National Police Week. It was a recognition of the selfless dedication of officers who, regardless of the dangers they face, serve with integrity and courage.

May 15 holds an even deeper significance for those of us in the Fraternal Order of Police. It is also the anniversary of the founding of the FOP, which has stood as the voice of law enforcement officers since 1915. The FOP not only sponsors the national observance but leads efforts to ensure these heroes are never forgotten and their families are never alone.

National and Local Observances

Each year, tens of thousands gather in Washington, D.C., for events such as the Candlelight Vigil, the National Peace Officers’ Memorial Service, the Blue Mass, and the Honor Guard Competition. The South Carolina FOP will be represented at these national ceremonies, standing in unity with survivors and officers from across the country.

Here at home, communities throughout South Carolina are also observing this sacred week with heartfelt tributes. These events are more than ceremonies—they are moments of collective remembrance and gratitude. This year’s statewide observances include:

  • May 12 – Charleston Metro Fallen Officer Prayer Service at 12:00 PM
  • May 14 – York County Police Honor and Memorial Service at 11:30 AM
  • May 15 – Kershaw County Peace Officers Memorial Day & Monument Groundbreaking at 10:00 AM
  • May 22 – South Carolina Law Enforcement Memorial at the Statehouse in Columbia at 6:30 PM

We invite everyone—officers, family members, and supporters—to attend and help us honor those who gave everything in defense of others.

A Week of Remembrance, A Lifetime of Respect

Peace Officers Memorial Day and Police Week remind us that law enforcement is more than a profession—it is a calling rooted in service, sacrifice, and commitment to the rule of law. These heroes walked into danger so others would not have to. Their legacy is not written only in stone, but in every safe community, every protected child, and every moment of peace they helped secure.

As we stand in reverence this week, the South Carolina Fraternal Order of Police reaffirms its promise: to remember the fallen, support the living, and continue the mission of defending those who defend others.

Let us never forget.
