SC Fallen Officers – April 25

April 25, 2025

Today, we remember Clio Police Department Sergeant Julian Branch, Aiken County Sheriff’s Office Sheriff Henry Hampton Howard, and Timmonsville Police Department Patrolman Lucius Victor Jenerette.

On this date in 1976, Sergeant Branch was shot and killed after a motor vehicle chase on SC Highway 35-19 around 11:30 pm. Sergeant Branch was a member of the force for about 16 months. He was a US Army veteran. He was survived by his mother, three brothers, and a sister.

On this date in 1925, Sheriff Henry Howard was shot and killed as he and three deputies attempted to serve a warrant for the manufacture of illegal liquor. As they approached the house, several men inside opened fire, fatally wounding Sheriff Howard. The deputies were able to return fire and killed two of the suspects. Sheriff Howard had been with the agency for 13 years and had previously served as a Constable and later as Chief of Police of Aiken, South Carolina. He was survived by his wife, seven children, and his three siblings.

On this date in 1954, Patrolman Lucius Jenerette was shot and killed while attempting to question a man who refused to pay a $3 taxi fare. Patrolman Jenerette had served with the Timmonsville Police Department for only four months. He was survived by his wife.
