
Today, we remember Cottageville Police Department Chief of Police Jerry Wayne Shelton and Moncks Corner Police Department Police Officer Lonnie Michael Wells.
On this date in 1989, Chief Jerry Shelton was shot and killed at approximately 1 a.m. by two suspects after arresting them following a traffic stop. Chief Shelton served with the Cottageville Police Department as the Chief of Police for over one year. He is survived by his mother and father, three brothers, two sisters, and a fiancée.
On this date in 2007, Officer Lonnie Wells was shot and killed, and Corporal Marcus Stiles was critically wounded when they responded to a domestic disturbance call at approximately 4:00 pm. Officer Wells had served with the agency for 2 years and was survived by his wife, Gwendolyn; his son, Lonnie Michael Wells, Jr.; his daughter, Deja Wells; his mother, three brothers, and two sisters.
