SC Fallen Officers – March 17

March 17, 2025

Today, we remember Chester District Sheriff Elijah Nunn.

On this date in 1809, Sheriff Nunn was shot and killed while attempting to serve a civil bail writ on Samuel Floyd for an unpaid debt.

As Sheriff Nunn began reading the writ, Floyd shot and killed him with a shotgun. Floyd finished plowing before sending to town for someone to come pick up the dead Sheriff. Sheriff Nunn who was not armed, was found with the civil process still in his hand. The recovered document had buckshot holes in it along with Sheriff Nunn’s blood.

Sheriff Elijah Nunn left behind a wife, four sons, and four daughters.

Samuel Floyd later surrendered to authorities. Floyd was convicted of murdering Sheriff Nunn and hanged in November 1809.
