SC Fallen Officers – January 12

January 12, 2025

Today, we remember South Carolina Law Enforcement Division – SLED Sergeant William Lawrence “Buddy” Laval, Jr., and Horry County Police Department Police Officer Melton Levi “Fox” Gore.

On this date in 1955, while running bloodhounds, Sgt. Buddy Laval suffered a heart attack while tracking an escaped convict and collapsed. He was being transported to Allendale County Hospital, but passed away en route. Sgt. Laval was 47 years old.

On this date in 2021, Police Officer Melton Gore was struck and killed by a vehicle while clearing debris from the roadway near the interchange of Highway 22 and Highway 31.
