FOP Volunteers Answer the Call After Hurricane Helene

October 3, 2024

In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, we were once again reminded of the incredible resilience and strength found within our FOP family. When disaster strikes, it’s not just the immediate damage that shakes us, but the long and exhausting road to recovery. For our law enforcement officers, that road is particularly challenging as they continue to protect and serve their communities, often while their own homes and families are affected.

President Patrick Yoes expressed his profound gratitude for the volunteers who answered the call during these trying times, and I want to echo those sentiments. Our Disaster Area Response Team (DART) deployments in Elizabethton, Tennessee, and right here in Aiken, South Carolina, showed the true heart of the Fraternal Order of Police. These men and women stepped up when our officers needed it most, providing not just physical support but emotional and moral strength as well.

In Aiken, South Carolina, the scene was devastating—downed trees, flooded homes, and families in distress. But amid this chaos, FOP volunteers arrived, not to be seen as heroes, but simply to help their fellow brothers and sisters in law enforcement. They cleared debris, delivered hot meals, and provided a shoulder to lean on. Each act of service allowed our officers to stay on the frontlines, knowing that their homes and families were being cared for by members of their own extended family—the FOP.

One story in particular stands out: An officer in Aiken had been working tirelessly for days on end, his home completely inaccessible due to fallen trees and flooding. When DART volunteers arrived at his doorstep, he was finally able to take a breath. These volunteers cleared his yard, ensuring that his family was safe, so he could return to his duties with a renewed focus. This is the essence of who we are as an organization—our strength lies not only in our numbers but in our shared commitment to one another.

Volunteers brought more than physical assistance; they brought hope. They reminded our officers that in their toughest hours, they were not alone. This sense of community, this bond of trust, is the bedrock of the FOP. It’s in moments like these that our partnerships and connections are strengthened, reminding us all why we stand together under the FOP banner.

The dedication and selflessness displayed by our volunteers during Hurricane Helene demonstrate the spirit of service that defines our organization. It’s a spirit rooted in resilience, in community, and in an unwavering commitment to one another. These efforts are not just about helping during a crisis but about showing that no matter the circumstances, we are stronger together.

To the volunteers who stepped forward during this time of need, know that your actions spoke volumes. You upheld the values that the FOP stands for, and you made a tangible difference in the lives of your fellow officers. In doing so, you reminded us all of what it truly means to be part of the FOP family.

Thank you for embodying the very best of our organization. Your contributions have not only supported recovery efforts but have also reinforced the bonds that make us who we are.
