Advocating for Affordable Housing for First Responders

July 11, 2024

The Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) has always stood as a stalwart advocate for the brave men and women who dedicate their lives to safeguarding our communities. Today, we are proud to unite with the National Fraternal Order of Police in voicing our strong support for S. 1514, the “Homes for Every Local Protector, Educator, and Responder (HELPER) Act.” This vital piece of legislation promises to bring much-needed relief and opportunity to those who serve on the front lines of our nation’s security and education.

Introduced by Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Jon Ossoff (D-GA), and backed by a bipartisan coalition of 25 members of Congress, the HELPER Act seeks to establish a home loan benefits program tailored specifically for first responders and educators. Modeled after the highly successful VA home loan program, this initiative aims to provide affordable housing options for those who serve our communities with unwavering dedication.

The importance of this legislation cannot be overstated. Law enforcement officers, firefighters, emergency medical technicians, and educators often face financial barriers that make homeownership an elusive dream. The HELPER Act recognizes their invaluable contributions and seeks to alleviate these burdens by offering favorable loan terms, reduced down payments, and more accessible pathways to homeownership.

At the core of this initiative is the acknowledgment that those who protect and educate should have the means to live in the communities they serve. The HELPER Act not only honors their commitment but also strengthens the fabric of our neighborhoods by fostering stability and continuity.

The National Fraternal Order of Police, representing over 373,000 members nationwide, has urged the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs to promptly review and favorably report this legislation. We echo this call to action and stand united with our national leadership in advocating for the swift passage of the HELPER Act.

As President Patrick Yoes articulated in his recent communication to the Senate committee, this legislation embodies the respect and gratitude we hold for our first responders and educators. It is a tangible way to support those who consistently put their lives on the line and invest in the future of our children.

We encourage our members, supporters, and community allies to join us in championing this critical legislation. By supporting the HELPER Act, we are taking a meaningful step towards ensuring that those who dedicate their lives to public service can afford to live in the communities they help to build and protect.

Together, let us advocate for the passage of S. 1514 and demonstrate our unwavering commitment to the men and women who exemplify courage, dedication, and service. Let us ensure that the dream of homeownership becomes a reality for all first responders and educators, thereby strengthening our communities and honoring their extraordinary contributions.

Call to Action:

Reach out to your US Senators and urge them to support the HELPER Act. Share this message within your networks to raise awareness and garner support for this vital legislation. Together, we can make a difference and provide our first responders and educators with the housing security they deserve.
