Subsistence Deduction Bill Has Upcoming Hearing

April 13, 2024

We have a crucial update regarding Senate Bill 969, a significant piece of legislation impacting our law enforcement officers. On Wednesday, April 17, 2024, at 9:30 AM, the Sales, Use, and Income Tax Legislative Subcommittee will convene in Room 427 of the Blatt Building. During this meeting, committee members will determine whether Senate Bill 969 advances further in the legislative process.

Why It Matters: Senate Bill 969 proposes vital amendments aimed at enhancing the working conditions and recognizing the sacrifices of our law enforcement professionals. The decision made during this Subcommittee meeting will significantly impact the future of this important legislation and, ultimately, the well-being of our officers.

Senate Bill 969 proposes crucial amendments to the South Carolina Code of Laws, specifically Section 12-6-1140. The bill aims to increase the subsistence deduction amount for certain paid public servants, including law enforcement officers, from $8 to $16. Additionally, it seeks to raise the volunteer exemption amount for certain unpaid public servants, such as law enforcement officers, from $3000 to $6000.
