Subsistence Increase Bill Sees Movement

February 19, 2024

We extend our sincere thanks to Senators Thomas C. Alexander and Harvey S. Peeler, Jr. for their outstanding leadership and unwavering support of law enforcement in South Carolina. Their dedication to our cause is evident in the introduction of Senate Bill 969, which is set to be heard by the Senate Finance Committee – Sales & Income Tax Subcommittee tomorrow, upon adjournment, in room 308 of the Gressette Building.

Senate Bill 969 proposes crucial amendments to the South Carolina Code of Laws, specifically Section 12-6-1140. The bill aims to increase the subsistence deduction amount for certain paid public servants, including law enforcement officers, from $8 to $16. Additionally, it seeks to raise the volunteer exemption amount for certain unpaid public servants, such as law enforcement officers, from $3000 to $6000.

This proposed legislation reflects a deep understanding of the challenges faced by law enforcement officers and the need for meaningful support. Senators Alexander and Peeler’s commitment to enhancing the working conditions and well-being of our law enforcement professionals is commendable.

Let us all express our gratitude for their leadership and advocate for the positive impact Senate Bill 969 can have on the lives of those who dedicate themselves to safeguarding our communities.
