Retired Darlington County sheriff honored as inductee in S.C. Law Enforcement Officers Hall of Fame

November 2, 2022

Law enforcement officers from various corners of South Carolina were celebrated in a distinguished ceremony, marking their induction into the prestigious S.C. Law Enforcement Officers Hall of Fame. This significant event aimed to acknowledge the meritorious service and outstanding contributions of eight exemplary officers to the field of law enforcement in the state.

Among the esteemed inductees was the retired Sheriff W. Glenn Campbell, a native of the Pee Dee region. Sheriff Campbell left an indelible mark on the law enforcement landscape, serving as the Darlington County Sheriff for an impressive 24 years. His tenure, which began with his election in 1985 and concluded with his retirement in 2008, solidified him as the longest-serving Sheriff in the county’s history, dating back to 1874.

Sheriff Campbell’s legacy extends beyond his remarkable tenure. During his time in office, he implemented initiatives to enhance law enforcement operations, including the replenishment of patrol vehicles and the introduction of programs to assist deputies in acquiring necessary equipment. Before his administration, deputies were burdened with the responsibility of purchasing their own equipment, including service weapons.

In a fitting tribute to his contributions, the Darlington County Detention Center was renamed the W. Glenn Campbell Detention Center in 2017.

South Carolina Fraternal Order of Police President Terry Gainey commended Sheriff Campbell, describing him as humble and compassionate. Gainey highlighted Campbell’s humility, noting that he never sought credit for the accomplishments of his agency. Instead, he consistently redirected recognition to his dedicated deputies and staff.

To be considered for induction, nominees must have a proven record of excellence and must not currently be employed by a law enforcement agency or have been employed in the past five years.

SCDPS Director Robert G. Woods, IV, emphasized the importance of honoring these law enforcement professionals. “Today, we rightly honor this group of law enforcement professionals who have demonstrated extraordinary commitment to duty and service throughout their commendable careers,” he stated. Their enduring legacy will be permanently displayed in the South Carolina Law Enforcement Officers Hall of Fame, ensuring that their diligence, commitment, and service to the state of South Carolina are recognized and celebrated.

Since its inception in 2017, the S.C. Hall of Fame has inducted 42 outstanding law enforcement officers, each recognized for their excellence in service to the community.
