Today, we remember Marion County Sheriff’s Office Posse Member Hosea Elwell Cook.
On this date in 1915, H. Elwell Cook accompanied Marion County Sheriff J.M. Dozier in the search for a burglary fugitive who had shot at Sheriff Dozier earlier. During the search, the fugitive shot and killed Mr. Cook.
Today, we remember Marion County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Sheriff Donald Ray Hayes, Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Sheriff William Howell, Jr., and Kershaw County Constable Richard F. Rowell.
On this date in 1987, Deputy Sheriff Donald Hayes succumbed to a gunshot wound received the previous day while serving an arrest warrant for simple assault. He was survived by his wife and three children.
On this date in 2008, Deputy Sheriff William Howell was shot and killed while responding to a domestic disturbance on Boyer Road at approximately 1:30 am. He is survived by his wife and four sons.
On this date in 1876, Constable R.F. Rowell was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a horse thief.

The urgency in the dispatcher’s voice echoed through the radio as he raced against time. Inside the lodge, a newborn baby named Ben had stopped breathing. Panic filled the room as the child’s parents looked on, desperate for help.
Without hesitation, Corporal Scott sprang into action. His training kicked in, and he performed CPR on little Ben. Every chest compression counted, every breath mattered. In those critical moments, Corporal Scott’s unwavering commitment to duty and compassion for life shone brightly.
The outcome was nothing short of miraculous. Ben’s tiny chest rose, and color returned to his lips. The room erupted in applause as Corporal Scott held the fragile life he had fought so hard to save. For his heroic efforts, he was awarded the Lifesaver Award by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.
Corporal Scott’s actions remind us that law enforcement officers are more than just their badges. They are our protectors, our guardians, and our everyday heroes. His dedication to serving the community extends beyond the call of duty, touching lives in profound ways.
