Today, we remember Greenville Police Department Patrolman William Frank Chasteen, Forest Acres Police Department Patrolman Richey O’Brian Finch, and Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Sheriff Ernest Christian Potter, III.

On this date in 1971, Patrolman William Chasteen was shot and killed while he and his partner attempted to question a man about an earlier shooting.

On this date in 1975, Patrolman Richey Finch was shot and killed during a traffic stop at 1:30 a.m. on Forest Drive near Gamewell Drive.

On this date in 1974, Deputy Sheriff Ernest Potter was shot and killed when he and his partner stopped to investigate two men who were hitchhiking on I-20, near U.S. 601.

As President of the South Carolina Fraternal Order of Police, I find it crucial to shed light on the recent pursuit involving the Forest Acres Police Department. This incident underscores the challenges officers face in the line of duty and emphasizes the need for continued support for law enforcement.

Recent events in Forest Acres, South Carolina, saw law enforcement engaged in a pursuit with a suspect accused of shoplifting. The suspect, identified as Ashley Baker, led officers on a chase through the city, culminating in a crash in someone’s front yard. The pursuit was both dynamic and perilous, showcasing the unpredictable nature of such situations.

One aspect that cannot be overlooked is the potential harm to innocent lives during these pursuits. In this particular case, four children, all 13 and younger and identified as the suspect’s own, were injured in the crash. Fortunately, their injuries were deemed “non-life threatening,” and they have been released from the hospital. Our thoughts go out to them, and we express gratitude that the injuries were not more severe.

Instances like these underscore the importance of maintaining law and order in our communities. As advocates for law enforcement, we cannot allow South Carolina to experience the lawlessness witnessed in other parts of the country, especially concerning issues like retail theft. It is imperative that we support our police departments in their efforts to combat crime and uphold the rule of law.

In light of recent events, the South Carolina Fraternal Order of Police reaffirms its commitment to supporting legislation that increases penalties for individuals who fail to stop when signaled by law enforcement.
